I didn't realize the true horror of what happened in Haiti until I was driving into work and began hearing the audio reports from those on the scene. It's a horrible tragedy for an already impoverished nation. There are numerous established charities set up to help. It's crazy that in this technological age, you can donate through your cell phone. I know that at least Wyclef Jean's foundation, Yele Haiti and the Red Cross are set up to accept text donations. Text "Yele" to 501501 and $5 will be charged to your phone bill and given to relief projects through the organization. Or, you can text "HAITI" to "90999" and a donation of $10 will be given automatically to the American Red Cross to help with relief efforts, charged to your cell phone bill.
For my family members who are reading this & are more geographically savvy than I, yes, Turks & Caicos is about 90 miles from the epicenter. Mom & Phil apparently spent the last 24 hours under a tsunami watch which has thankfully be canceled. She emailed & said they are back on Providenciales. No word on whether they have been advised to stay away from coastlines (which seems pretty difficult considering the entire island is only 38 square miles).
